Low temperatures and dry air cause the tear film that protects the eye surface to evaporate more quickly. As a result of this process, discomforts such as watery eyes, a gritty sensation, burning, and redness occur.
The editorial office reports that ophthalmologist Ivan Zarubin issued a warning about this. According to him, the aforementioned symptoms are considered a protective reaction of the body.
The specialist stated that with regular exposure to cold and dry air, this protective mechanism can become pathological. As a result, the risk of developing eye diseases such as dry eye syndrome and conjunctivitis significantly increases.
The ophthalmologist emphasized the importance of protecting the eyes, especially during the winter season, and advised avoiding prolonged stays in open environments in cold weather and paying attention to eye health.
