Cindy McCain, Executive Director of the UN World Food Programme, has called the food situation in the Gaza Strip catastrophic.
The UN official spoke about this in an interview with Japan's “NHK” television channel.
According to McCain, the UN World Food Programme is the largest and only organization capable of providing the amount of food Gaza needs, but humanitarian efforts are hampered by the actions of Israeli military personnel:
“The situation is catastrophic. There is a very serious food shortage problem there; people are dying of hunger. It is very difficult when weapons, tanks, and other armaments are pointed at us.”
According to the latest figures from the Gaza Ministry of Health, the total number of Palestinians killed in the Strip as a result of the fighting has exceeded 62,000, over 157,000 residents have been injured, and another 270 residents of the enclave, including 112 children, have died of hunger.
