President Ilham Aliyev's state visit to Georgia and the official statements made there once again demonstrated that relations between the two countries have deep roots and a broad strategic agenda. In this context, Azerbaijan and Georgia, in addition to being neighbors, are also expanding cooperation as reliable partners. These relations, based on mutual respect, trust, and common interests, are presented as an exemplary model for the region.
One of the issues that held a special place in the leaders' joint press statement was economic cooperation. The favorable investment environment in Georgia stimulates the flow of Azerbaijani capital into the country. The investment volume of 3.7 billion dollars and increasing trade turnover reflect the real results of economic ties. This cooperation is not limited to a bilateral framework. As the President of Azerbaijan also emphasized, the prospect of implementing joint investment projects in third countries in the future can further strengthen the role of the Baku-Tbilisi tandem as a regional economic actor.
Azerbaijan and Georgia's constant support for each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity within international organizations is one of the key factors confirming the strategic level of their relations. This mutual support serves to protect regional stability and strengthen positions in the international arena.
One of the main points highlighted in President Ilham Aliyev's statement concerns the new geopolitical realities forming in the South Caucasus. The head of state noted that it has already transformed from a conflict zone into a zone of cooperation and stability, emphasizing the importance of utilizing these opportunities. Georgia's role as a regional country is particularly noted here. Especially, the implementation of trade between Azerbaijan and Armenia via Georgia demonstrates this country's effective mediating role in regional stability and economic integration.
It is evident that Azerbaijan's energy policy and Georgia's transit capabilities are key factors increasing the global importance of the region. Projects such as the Southern Gas Corridor and Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan are of significant importance not only economically but also geopolitically. Furthermore, the Middle Corridor project transforms the two countries into a major transport bridge between Europe and Asia. As the President of Azerbaijan also noted, this corridor already functions as a “main transport artery,” and its expansion is among the priority directions. Infrastructure projects implemented within the framework of the Middle Corridor project – railways, ports, and logistics centers – make significant contributions to the economies of Azerbaijan and Georgia. These projects lead to the creation of new jobs, the improvement of the business environment, and an increase in foreign investments. In short, the Middle Corridor project significantly strengthens the role of Azerbaijan and Georgia in the international arena. These countries are recognized as important partners not only within the region but also in the Eurasian space. Cooperation platforms established within the project expand political dialogue and serve to strengthen stability in the region.
In particular, initiatives such as the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway increase the region's logistics potential, making it more attractive to international investors.
The views expressed by President Ilham Aliyev in Tbilisi reveal not only the current state of Azerbaijan-Georgia relations but also their future priorities. These relations, based on principles of friendship, are strengthened by concrete economic, political, and strategic interests.
