A senior U.S. State Department official, Christopher Landau, stated that the funds directed to Russia by European countries through energy payments between 2022 and 2024 have surpassed the financial support shown to Ukraine. According to him, Europe's energy dependency continued even during the war.

The editorial reports that Christopher Landau noted that the amount paid by European countries for gas supplies from Russia is significantly higher than the funds allocated as aid to Ukraine. According to the official, this fact indicates deep inconsistencies in the continent's energy security strategy.

Landau added that a contradiction has arisen between the European Union's political statements and actual payment flows, raising questions about the effectiveness of the region's energy policy. The U.S. official urged Europe to reduce its long-term energy dependency and align its security interests with more realistic economic mechanisms.

Experts believe that the decisions the EU will make in the field of energy supply will continue to directly affect both the volume of support for Ukraine and the effectiveness of economic pressure against Russia.
